Poll:
What (if anything) should Central Expressway be renamed?

DALLAS -- State Representative Dan Branch (R-Dallas) has filed a bill to name a seven-mile stretch of Central Expressway for President George W. Bush. It would tie neatly with the Bush Library at 75 and Mockingbird.

Dallas teacher Dana Morris thinks she has a better idea.

"I think the Chris Kyle Expressway," she said.

But she makes it clear she wants the change to honor former Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle, not diminish President Bush.

"I'm a total Bush supporter," she said, "but he does have his presidential library here. He does have a street named after him."

University Park just voted to rename a street near the library "Bush Avenue." Then there's 161, the Bush Turnpike, named for President George H.W. Bush.

Morris said that could be confusing.

"People refer to it as the 'Bush,'" she pointed out.

Once Morris got the idea for Chris Kyle Memorial Expressway, she put the pedal down.

"I did a petition, and sent Facebook messages to all my friends and said, 'Will you please sign this?'" Morris said.

She also contacted Representative Branch, who quickly responded that he would consider her input.

Drivers getting onto Central Thursday had mixed views.

Some loved the idea. Others said it would always just be "Central" or "75" to them. All, however, knew of the slain former Navy SEAL, and felt he deserved such an honor.

One of his friends suggested it might be more appropriate, and easier, to rename a stretch of Highway 287 -- which Kyle frequently drove near his home in Midlothian.

Morris, who teaches Texas history to seventh graders, said it's about more than naming a road. It's a lesson for her students.

"Most of all," she said, "if they get involved in the community, they can make that change for people and for themselves."
