DALLAS — Busy mom Sonya Johnson has made a commitment to do a 180 when it comes to her own health.
That commitment starts with a weight loss goal.
Johnson was originally told she could lose as much as 70 pounds, but a consultation with Medical City Dallas dietitian Gulrukhsar Jiwani indicates that 38 pounds may be a more reasonable goal.
"I was shocked when I heard 70 pounds," Johnson admitted. "But 38 is a good start."
During the meeting, Jiwani asked Johnson about her eating habits — including foods she eats regularly, portion sizes, and meal times.
Johnson admitted she often skips meals and eats lunch out almost every day.
Based on her habits, Jiwani recommended five quick changes that Johnson can make immediately:
- Don't eat out as often
- Don't skip meals
- Drink a glass of water before a meal
- Exercise at least 15 minutes a day
- Reduce the amount of soda intake
Jiwani said these are all steps that don't take much effort. "I think you'll see a little bit of difference with that," she added.
Cutting out soda alone could help Sonya Johnson lose 15 pounds over the course of the year.
Next week: Gulrukhsar Jiwani goes to the supermarket with Johnson to review some realistic substitutions for the foods she currently enjoys.
