DALLAS — An investigation is under way after eight children ranging in age from two to 12 were found alone in a church where the family was given shelter in Dallas.

The children were taken to Dallas Fire-Rescue Station No. 33 by a witness who saw the mother leave the church, located in the 2400 block of Marsalis Avenue, without her children at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday, according to a statement released by Dallas police spokesman Sgt. Warren C. Mitchell.

According to the statement, the witness waited several hours for the mother to return before taking the children to the fire station.

Police said the family had been staying at the church for some time before the incident.

Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said firefighters at Station No. 33 entertained the children for about 45 minutes before Dallas police arrived.

Child Protective Services took custody of the children as the mother was located and faces questions. An investigation into possible child abandonment charges is under way.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
