DALLAS -- A truck driver called police after being surprised by two men banging on the roof of the cab of his truck while on Interstate 35 Tuesday night.

The two stowaways told Dallas police they climbed onto the roof of the truck in Edinburg, Texas -- about an eight-hour drive from Dallas -- near the border with Mexico. They said they had started to get cold after nightfall, so they started banging on the roof in order to get the driver to stop.

They had traveled more than 500 miles.

When the driver heard their banging, he called 911 and kept driving until police caught up with him on northbound Central Expressway just past Walnut Hill Lane.

The two men said they are Honduran nationals. They were transported by DPD to the Dallas County Jail where they were interviewed by representatives of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. They were later released.

This was not the first time this has happened to the truck driver, police said. No details were offered on previous incidents.
