DALLAS — Several hundred classmates, friends and family members assembled quietly outside Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center Saturday night to pay tribute to 18-year-old Fabian Gonzalez, a senior at the school who was killed in a head-on crash early Saturday morning.

Police said the Gonzalez, driving a Chevrolet Tahoe sport utility vehicle, was speeding northbound in the 4200 block of South Walton Walker Boulevard near Cockrell Hill Road around 12:30 a.m.

He lost control of his vehicle on a curve, and it careened into the southbound lanes, hitting a Nissan Maxima sedan as it was rolling over.

According to investigators, Gonzalez was ejected from his SUV and was dead at the scene. The driver and a passenger in the Maxima were taken to Methodist Dallas Medical Center for treatment of injuries.

Gonzalez was a senior at Yvonne A. Ewell Townview Center, where counselors will be in place for students and faculty on Monday.

Classmates gathered in front of the campus for a vigil in Gonzalez' honor on Saturday night. Organizers asked people to bring blue-and-white candles to honor his affection for Duke University sports.

"His goal was to make everybody laugh, and he always accomplished that goal by like being himself," said fellow student Amy Hortha. "He was just such a genuine person."

"Fabian: I will miss you, young man," added his uncle, Emiliano Tovar.  "I will miss you. You will live in my heart and I will see you again pretty soon. I will see you again, Fabian."
