DALLAS — A rare parrot is back safe with its owners, but the woman who stole the red Solomon Islands Eclectus remains at large.
The boldness of the crime surprised many. Security cameras showed a woman walking out of a the Petland store at Preston Road and Forest Lane in Dallas last week with the $1,700 bird.
Amateur animal rescuer Mike Sims said he purchased exotic pet from a homeless person for $100, not realizing that it was stolen merchandise.
"Teddy called me up and said, 'Mike, I was just reading the newspaper and came to find out that bird is stolen!' Oh my God, I had no idea!" Sims said.
He returned the bird to the pet store on Sunday.
"Her pupils are dilated, which means she's just stressed, and her feathers are a little frayed from being in a small cage," said pet store employee Tiffany Laskowski.
Police are still looking for the woman responsible for the theft.
