DALLAS -— Fred Conwright and his BBQ restaurant, Two Podners, are planning a major expansion, and now have support from the city.

"We're excited for the new growth, the upcoming future for this community," Conwright said during Thursday morning’s announcement.

When Conwright and his partner wanted to create a shopping center based around their restaurant. They were able to front $1.4 million, but came up short.

That’s where the city stepped in, approving a $275,000 loan during Wednesday’s council meeting.

The money will go towards an 11,000 square foot restaurant center with room for five restaurants, all anchored by Two Podners. Work will begin shortly on the 1400 block of Robert B. Cullum in Fair Park.

"I think you have got all the land around a core asset that is Fair Park, and it is a shame that we don’t have amenities," said Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins.

Talk two the owners, and they'll quickly tell you it's hardly a hand out, but rather an investment in growth.

"A seed has been planted, now we're asking you all to help us make it grow," Conwright said from the podium. "Thank you, we thank you, we thank you."

The city has to do a street abandonment for the project, which hopes to begin in two months and be completed by September.
