GARLAND — An off-duty officer doing security work at a Garland Walmart store shot a shoplifting suspect on Sunday afternoon.

That suspect, Casey Daniel Smith, 31, or Kemp, Texas, later died.

Police said the officer first fired a Taser at the man as he fled the store on Northwest Highway just east of LBJ Freeway. When that proved to be ineffective, investigators said Smith tried to attack the officer with a crowbar.

The 19-year veteran of the Garland Police Department issued a verbal warning and then opened fire, hitting the suspect one time.

Smith was taken to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, where he later died.

Officers linked Smith to a stolen Cadillac found in the same Walmart parking lot. It had been taken in the car-jacking of an 82-year-old woman Saturday in Eustace, Texas.
