DALLAS — Fire claimed the life of an elderly man in the Red Bird area of Dallas early Saturday morning.

Smoke was pouring from the front of the 2,300 square foot brick home in the 900 block of Glen Oaks Boulevard when firefighters arrived at 3:35 a.m.

The fire in the front living area of the residence was tapped out, but the victim — identified as 79-year-old Walter Love Simmons — was found dead near the ignition point.

Simmons' wife was also in the house at the time of the fire. "If not for the sound of the smoke detectors warning the occupant, the situation could have turned out even worse," investigators said in a written statement.

Dallas residents who need a smoke detector can call 311 to request a free unit with installation by Dallas Fire-Rescue.

The cause of the fire in the Woodland Canyon subdivision remains under investigation. Damage was estimated at $10,000.
