DALLAS — DART will roll out the first of its new-generation buses on Monday, part of a fleet aimed at saving money at the regional transit agency.
The new 30- and 40-foot vehicles built by North American Bus Industries Inc. of Anniston, Alabama are more aerodynamic, have larger windshields, and are fueled by compressed natural gas.
DART has ordered 459 new vehicles to replace its current fleet that operates on liquified natural gas and diesel. They feature increased leg room for passengers, better window tinting, color LED destination signs and on-board security cameras.
In addition, schedule information will be displayed on real-time display screens.
The transit agency is hoping to cut its yearly fuel costs by two-thirds with the switch to the new clean-burning fuel.
The fleet replacement is expected to be complete by 2015.
