DALLAS – Police officers shot and killed a suspect in an Oak Cliff apartment complex Friday morning, said Deputy Chief Gil Garza.

Investigators with the Crime Response Team were driving in the parking lot at 4500 W. Kiest Blvd. when they spotted a suspicious vehicle and stopped it. The apartment complex is known for drug activity, Garza said.

The officers approached the vehicle and "a struggle ensued." Fearing for his life, one officer shot a suspect, Lenny Ellis, 30, while the other fled, Garza said.

"He didn't go very far," Garza said. "It wasn't much of a search, he was nearby."

The Crime Response Team is a specialized division of the department that investigates drug and criminal complaints in the southwest portion of the city.

The other suspect hasn't been identified and Garza did not elaborate on why the vehicle was suspicious or why police approached it. Police said they found drugs in the car.
