Mom accused of leaving kids
DALLAS –– Dallas police on Monday arrested a 26-year-old mother who is accused of leaving her five children home alone while she ran errands.
According to an arrest affidavit, Dallas officers responding to a burglary call in the 9900 block of Bruton Rd. were approached by a barefoot 8-year-old and two of his siblings.
Police say the boy told them his mom wasn’t home and that he was taking care of his brothers and sisters –– all four of them.
The boy led the officers to the apartment where they found one of the children, who was described as special needs and unable to see, sitting in a training potty under a sink. The 8-year-old said his mom told the child in the potty to sit there until she returned.
Authorities say the apartment smelled of urine and feces, and that there were beer cans, cigarettes and a plastic bag containing marijuana sitting within reach of small hands.
As officers waited for Child Protective Services to arrive, Cavit returned home, stating she has left the children in the apartment since 8:30 a.m. At that time, it was 1:20 p.m. According to the affidavit, she told police, “I was running errands.”
The children are now in the custody of Cavit’s mother. The 26-year-old was taken to Lew Sterrett Justice Center and charged with five counts of endangering and abandoning a child with intent to return. She’s being held on $2,500 bond.
