When the cornmeal had settled, two fried foodstuffs emerged victorious in the 2013 Big Tex Choice Awards; the Deep Fried Cuban Roll, and Fried Thanksgiving Dinner.

The Cuban Roll beat out a hefty field of eight to take the win in the best taste category, while Fried Thanksgiving Dinner won in the most creative category.

The Cuban Roll is described as a filling of slow cooked pork shoulder, chopped ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, and secret sauce is spread onto a slice of Swiss cheese, rolled up in pastry dough, and deep fried, in a State Fair press release. The roll is served with a side of majo sauce for dipping.

Fried Thanksgiving Dinner is described thusly: Mama’s homemade stuffing and diced roasted turkey are rolled in a ball. Next it’s dipped in southern cream corn and rolled in seasoned corn meal - all fried to a crispy golden brown. Served with old fashion giblet brown gravy.   The zesty orange cranberry sauce fills your dipping needs and results in a complete thanksgiving dinner, fried!

The pair beat out Awesome Deep Fried Nutella, Fernie’s Deep Fried King Ranch Casserole, Golden Fried Millionaire Pie, Spinach Dip Bites, Southern Style Chicken-Fried Meatloaf, and the Texas Fried Fireball for their titles.

You can see full descriptions of all of the finalists here, and photos of some of the contenders here.

Last year's winners were a fried bacon cinnamon roll in best taste, and deep-fried jambalaya in most creative.

The Texas State Fair runs Sept. 27 through Oct. 20.
