LANCASTER — Police and crime scene detectives are investigating a fatal shooting at an apartment complex in Lancaster Wednesday night.

A person was approached by a robbery suspect in the parking lot of the Bel-Air Place Apartments at 1508 Dewberry Boulevard around 8:45 p.m., investigators said. That person was led to an apartment by the suspect.

"All appearances lead us to believe the robber confronted the individual outside the apartment," said Lt. Kelly Hooten, a spokesman with the Lancaster Police Department. "They went up to the victim's apartment, where the gun battle started."

Gunfire was reported around 8:45 p.m. in an upstairs apartment and the gun battle then moved to the parking lot, where the suspect was shot and killed by the victim, police said. The suspect was found dead inside the victim's vehicle.

The shooter was not expected to be charged. No names were available early Thursday morning.

Police said the circumstances of the incident remain under investigation.
