A DeSoto man died Saturday evening after drowning at Joe Pool Lake.

Grand Prairie police said David Orozco, 44, had been swimming at a beach on the Cedar Hill side of the lake around 8 p.m. when he attempted to retrieve a flotation device for a family member.

Witnesses said Orozco — who was not wearing a life jacket — was last seen slipping beneath the water's surface.

The Grand Prairie Public Safety Dive Team used sonar to locate the victim, and divers retrieved his body from the lake.

Police said this is the first drowning of 2014 at Joe Pool Lake.
