Dallas police holding crawfish boil in fallen officer's memory

DALLAS -- Hundreds of pounds of critters were crawling around Friday afternoon at the Dallas Police Association headquarters.

Over there, they’re cooking up 500 pounds – yes, 500 pounds - of crawfish. Cajun style.

“Tonight, we’ve got crawfish, sausage, potatoes, corn –- the whole shooting match,” said Dallas Police Officer Daniel Mulvihill, one of the cooks and a Louisiana native. “If you’re kind of finicky and you don't like crawfish, then we’ve got hamburgers and hot dogs for you.”

The event is being held in memory of Dallas Police Officer Carmen Ortega, who died last year of cervical cancer. Organizers are expecting hundreds of people to attend, and proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the Assist the Officer Foundation, which helps officers who have been injured in the line of duty or who are facing life-altering situations, such as serious medical conditions.

This is the third year that the event has been held. The first year, it was organized by officers from southeast patrol who wanted to help Ortega with her massive medical bills.

“Insurance just wasn’t quite covering it,” Mulvihill said. “She asked us before she died to make sure that we continue doing this every year and keep it in her memory.”

Members of Ortega’s family will be on hand for the fundraiser.

Christina Ortega, her sister, said Ortega worked for the department for 10 years and that police work was her passion.

She said other police officers have stayed in contact with her sister’s 15-year-old son.

“Carmen was a very giving person,” Christina Ortega said, adding that her sister would have been happy to know that her fellow officers were continuing the tradition.
