DALLAS -- A Dallas police officer fired his gun at a vehicle in the early hours of Sunday morning after a passenger in the car refused to comply with the officer's commands to exit the vehicle.

Around 1:00 a.m. Sunday, officers were driving on Forney Road when they observed vehicles preparing to race. The officers turned on the lights in their squad car and all but one of the vehicles fled.

According to a police release, the officers then approached the remaining vehicle with their weapons drawn and commanded the occupants to show their hands and exit the car. The driver complied, but the passenger, Joshua Lyons, 19, stayed in the vehicle and made threatening gestures at the officers.

According to the release, Officer Bernadino Ledezma feared for his life and fired his weapon, striking the vehicle. Lyons and the driver were then taken into custody. The driver was later released and Lyons was arrested for an outstanding alias ticket in Mesquite.

No one was injured.

Internal affairs will conduct an administrative investigation, as with all police-involved shootings.
