Dallas attorney joining presidential inauguration security detail

DALLAS - Pete Schulte got the telephone call long before the election ended.

"This has been a very lengthy process to figure out who was going to get to go, and what we were going to be doing, and that sort of thing," he explained.

Schulte, 35, is a Dallas defense attorney who represents high-profile clients like country star Randy Travis and Deion Sanders' wife, Pilar.

But before becoming a lawyer, he spent seven years as a police officer in McKinney and Murphy. Schulte continues to maintains his commission in Brazos County, where he started his career in law enforcement in 1998.

The Presidential Inauguration Task Force invited members of his department in Bryan to assist with the security detail during next weekend's inaugural activities.

"We're going to be deputized as special US Marshals for four days, so we'll get a neat badge that says we're federal agents for four days and we'll be going wherever we're told to go," he said. "It's going to be pretty neat."

In Washington D.C., workers are setting up thousands of folding chairs on the Capitol's lawn. The Air Force Honor Guard has begun rehearsing and inaugural souvenir shops are already selling merchandise.

The Secret Service would not reveal how many extra law enforcement officers it has recruited, but they're coming from everywhere. News 8 learned of dozens of police officers, sheriff's deputies, and university cops who are making the trip from Texas.

"It's not about politics," Schulte said. "It's not about being in D.C. for a specific person. It's about the experience -- being with everybody who going to be there and seeing the thousands of people who are going to come celebrate our democracy."

Schulte's job is to protect the public while all eyes are on the president.
