DALLAS –– A three alarm fire tore through a mansion near White Rock Lake, causing authorities to shut down Buckner Blvd. in both directions for a time Thursday afternoon.

The home, located at 1850 Buckner Blvd., went up in flames at about 3:25 p.m. A second alarm was called at 4:25 p.m. and a third came at 4:55 p.m. The location is between Garland Rd. and Interstate 30.

The mansion is vacant but its owners were on scene, said Dallas Fire Rescue spokesman Jason Evans. He said the first firefighters on scene reported seeing black smoke coming from under the roof of the two-story home.

"I am told that the roof is made of such a material that it is not only keeping the fire inside the structure, but it is also slowing the ability of firefighters to put water on it from above," he wrote in an e-mail.

The residence is the former home of the Center for Scientology.

As of 5:20 p.m., Evans said there were no reports of injuries to firefighters or civilians.
