DALLAS -- A fatal accident shut down all lanes -- north- and southbound -- for a period of hours on the Dallas North Tollway Friday afternoon.

Traffic was even rerouted for a time with motorists moving north in the southbound lanes.

DPS responded to the accident in the southbound lanes of the tollway near Frankford Road at approximately 3:30 p.m., according to Lonny Haschel with the Texas Department of Public Safety.

A triple-axel truck with a drilling rig mounted on its bed was traveling southbound when a tire blowout pulled it to the left lane, Haschel said. The drilling rig arm on the back of the truck shifted and was hanging over the northbound lanes of the tollway when a pickup traveling north in the left lane of the Dallas North Tollway struck the drilling arm, killing the driver.

The driver of the drilling rig was not injured. The truck and rig are registered to Dallas Foundation Drilling Company, Inc.

All lanes were reopened by about 8:15 p.m. Friday.
