GRAND PRAIRIE — A 12-year-old boy was hospitalized and more than a dozen other people were hurt Saturday night in a collision involving three boats at Joe Pool Lake, police said.
Two of the boats were tied together in the water about 200 yards offshore near Lynn Creek Park in Grand Prairie when, according to witnesses, a pontoon boat sped toward the others. The impact sent that vessel airborne and left it partially submerged.
Johnny Hearn, who owned the boat that was hit, said it all happened very quickly.
"The boat just kind of rode along the top edge, dove off, and people started... threw people out of that boat, screaming and all that," he said. "That's when we started trying to save people."
Witnesses said the deck boat was crowded with people and going too fast so close to shore.
The injured boy was taken to Children's Medical Center in Dallas by helicopter ambulance, where he was reported to be in surgery early Sunday morning. His name and condition were unavailable.
Thirteen other boaters suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.
Police said alcohol use does not appear to have been a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
