DALLAS — Two people were killed and one motorist was arrested in a violent, three-vehicle accident in southeast Dallas Monday night.
"I saw the truck just run the light, and I saw when it hit the car," said witness Ismail Tores.
The intersection of Military Parkway and Jim Miller Road was strewn with debris and closed to all traffic following the 9:30 p.m. collision.
Some of the survivors were taken to Baylor Medical Center and Children's Medical Center Dallas for treatment. An eight-year-old girl was critically injured.
"The officer told me there was two other kids," said witness Junnetta Carr.
The Dallas County Medical Examiner's office identified the dead as 49-year-old James Carr of Dallas and 43-year-old Lashun Russell of Dallas. It was not clear whether they were related to the injured children.
Investigators charged 34-year-old Leodegario Hernandez Juarez of Irving with two counts of intoxication manslaughter and one count of intoxication assault. A police report said Juarez, driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck, ran a red light at the intersection, crashing into two other cars.
The impact wrapped one of the cars around a metal utility pole.
Police said witnesses tackled and detained Juarez, who attempted to run from the scene after the crash. Jail records indicate he was in the United States illegally.
