Police: Driver was racing in fatal hit-and-run

DALLAS -- A man is dead after being hit and killed by a car in Southeast Dallas, while the driver who hit him is in police custody.

Police say Avery Gardner, 26, was speeding along Buckner Boulevard around 10:15 p.m. Thursday, trying to race another car. The victim, a black 54-year-old male, stepped off the curb and was hit by Gardner.

The victim died at the scene, police said. Gardner fled, but police caught up with him at a nearby DART station.

Gardner was arrested and charged with manslaughter and failure to stop and render aid.

The victim's name has not yet been released.
