Dallas targets those who give to panhandlers in new campaign

The Dallas Office of Community Affairs is proposing a campaign tomorrow, to raise awareness about the city's aggressive solicitation. It will aim to discourage donations to individuals on roadways and encourage residents and visitors of Dallas to redirect

The city of Dallas still wants people to give charitably to those in need, but just not to panhandlers.

The city council Public Safety Committee on Monday will hear a presentation to reroute giving through a website, texting and re-purposing some parking meters in high traffic areas.

"Give Right-Dallas" is designed to discourage panhandling in three target areas by changing public behavior surrounding the practice.

Deep Ellum, an area near Preston Center and Highway 12 and Forest & Abrams will be part of the pilot program when it begins in December.
