PLANO — A fire being blamed on a Christmas tree turned fatal as a Plano family was preparing to celebrate the holiday.
Firefighters encountered heavy flames and smoke when they arrived at the home in the 2500 block of Parkhaven Drive around 7:20 p.m.
They found an 87-year-old man inside who could not be revived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
"The family of five was at home at the time," said Plano Fire Department spokeswoman Peggy Harrell. "Everybody but the one victim was able to get out safely."
The name of the victim was not released.
One firefighter involved in the attempted rescue was taken to a hospital for treatment of burns. He was later released.
