The deadly storms we've seen in the past two months have more people talking about storm shelters.

Starting Wednesday, North Texans can apply for up to $3,000 from the government to build a safe room in their homes.

The plan is available to residents of Dallas, Tarrant, Denton, and Collin counties. FEMA will pay up to half the cost of a shelter.

There are a number of stipulations to applicants for the Metro Safe Room Rebate Program. Funds will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis.

The North Central Texas Council of Governments, which is administering the program, says funding is available for approximately 110 safe rooms per county.

NCTCOG says it hopes to be able to expand the rebate program to all 16 counties in its region in the future.
