ANNA — Police in Anna have reached out to the public as they investigate a crash that killed one person and critically injured an off-duty firefighter Tuesday morning on State Highway 121.

The two-vehicle crash occurred near the Collin County Outer Loop at about 7:30 a.m., said Sgt Jeff Caponera.

Police say Zelia Alvarez of Prosper died in route to the hospital. She was a court clerk with the City of Prosper.

Lindy Lawley — an off-duty Plano firefighter — was taken to the Medical Center of Plano and was initially reported in critical condition.

His condition has stabilized since he was hospitalized.

Police and emergency personnel said they have responded to the eight-mile stretch east of Anna along Highway 121 too often. Anna police Sgt. Jeff Caponera told WFAA that there have been seven deaths along that stretch of highway in the last two years.

The last fatal crash happened on April 15.

"This stretch of roadway is a deadly roadway," Sgt. Caponera said. "People just drive at a high rate of speed along here. It's not uncommon to catch someone doing 85-90 miles an hour."

Plano Fire Chief Brian Crawford provided us this statement on the accident involving his employee:

"With respect for the family's wishes for privacy during this very difficult time, Plano Fire-Rescue offers their collective thoughts and prayers with those involved and affected by today's tragic accident."

Police have stepped up patrols along Highway 121, but they know it’s not enough to shed the highway's bad reputation. Police have asked for anyone who may have witnessed Tuesday morning's crash to call 972-924-2848.
