Bystanders shot in troubled South Dallas neighborhood

Bystanders shot in South Dallas neighborhood

DALLAS (WFAA) -- Police said two people were hit by gunshots outside the Little World Food Store early Friday morning including at least one innocent bystander who was shot in the head.

Shell casings were littered all over Malcolm X Boulevard in South Dallas as police investigated the scene where they said multiple people were firing shots. The initial shots were believed to be targeted at a certain group or individual in the parking lot. But of the two people hit, police said at least one was simply a bystander. The woman sitting in her car was hit in the head and taken to Baylor University Medical Center for surgery. Police said she was still alert and talking at the time she was transported.

The neighborhood is no stranger to violence and those living there are looking for help.

This shooting happened just a few weeks after two teenagers were shot in nearby Wheatley Park.

There have been recent attempts to curb the shootings and crime including the recent introduction of armed security guards to canvass the area and build relationships with neighbors.

Surveillance video from the Little World Food Store was given to police.
