DALLAS — Maybe you've noticed new LCD advertising screens going up in downtown Dallas. It's just the start of a much bigger transformation now under way.

The downtown district boasts 250 bars, restaurants and lounges, 150 places to shop, and a residential population that has doubled in the past five years.

John Crawford, president and CEO of Downtown Dallas Inc. says suburban life is giving way to the city. "In terms of the mindset, it's live, work, and play urban environment," he said.

"As a part of activating and animating, certainly technology, graphics, art, lights — that's all a part of it," added Kourtny Garrett, spokeswoman for Downtown Dallas Inc.

It includes super-size advertising graphics on buildings, along with special laser-like lighting to highlight street corners.

"You will have in this building more hotel rooms, more meeting space and ground-floor retail," Garrett said during a tour of downtown."

And that means fewer empty buildings, thanks to one investor who purchased most of the vacant property on one downtown street.

"It has, frankly, escalated everything we've wanted to do for a good while, and put things in quick motion to make sure they happen," Crawford said.

Neiman Marcus is stepping up, too. Senior management at the landmark downtown department store is opening up its Rolodex to encourage people that now is the time to move to Dallas as this futuristic vision is in place, and in motion.

"As goes downtown so goes Dallas," Crawford said. "It is that important."

Who in their right mind wants to live in a concrete jungle? Noise from all the buses, drunks, homeless drunks, break ins, trash trucks picking up all night, high utility bills due to many of there condos or lofts have poor insulation. The only benefit would be if you worked downtown Dallas, and you could walk to work, passing all the homeless people begging for money. No Thank You!

Why are we wasting money to update downtown when we let the biggest downtown renovation focus point moved to Arlington without any resistance??? The majority of other downtown areas with major sports teams have their arena/stadium/baseball park in or very near their downtown area. Then we wouldn't be worried about getting and retaining tenants for Victory Park, justifying a need for the "tax-payer hotel", the underused convention center with heliport and a park over the Woodall Rodgers Expressway(?) leading into the Uptown and Arts Districts. Downtown Dallas might die out like a couple of other Downtown cities with economic problems. It will be very sad that Dallas' downtown area will be the first to die at the hands of mayors and city councils who can't see the forest for the trees (my personal opinion). So I will settle to hear about the selling of public parks to make budget, budget problems for Dart Rail Expansions and the problems of the Trinity River Project.

Just think where downtown would be had they built the Ballpark in Farmer's Market & the Jones Mahal Death Star in Fair Park. If downtown is to be a destination, it needs to have destinations. The Arts District is trying to accomplish that. Too bad most N. TXans are allergic to culture :(

Clean up downtown....yeah...ok...start by getting rid of all the stinky homeless people. I can;t even walk in to the library without getting "attacked" by a bunch of crazy homeless people
