FORT WORTH — A 65-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene after her pickup truck veered off a bridge over the Trinity River on northbound Loop 820 Monday morning in East Fort Worth.
Fort Worth police said rain likely played a role in Janice Smith losing control of the vehicle at about 7 a.m.
According to a statement from Sharron Neal, a spokeswoman with the Fort Worth Police Department, Smith was driving in the left lane while traveling northbound when she lost control of her truck, which veered to the left, crashing into a guardrail and onto the railing. The railing was pushed up, thrusting the vehicle off the bridge and onto the riverbed.
Neal said investigators at the scene described the road conditions as "dark and raining, no street lighting."
The freeway was closed for several hours as authorities investigated and crews worked to clear the scene. It reopened at 9:54 a.m.
