WISE COUNTY — A wildfire continued burning Wednesday night in Wise County, 35 miles northwest of Fort Worth. Five homes were destroyed and 20 others were threatened.

Wise County Fire Marshal Marc Dodd says the fire blackened 500 acres after breaking out early Wednesday afternoon near Cottondale.

Homeowner Cindy Clayton said she first smelled the smoke. When she opened her front door, she could see black clouds getting closer to her house.

Clayton alerted her husband, who used to be a volunteer firefighter. "He said, 'Get some things and get out,' so I started grabbing, and he says, 'Forget that, get out, it's too late!' It was already on top of us."

Clayton said her home is gone, and she thinks her family has lost everything. She said her church was helping them get through the night.

Dodd said fire crews from Texas Forest Service and 13 nearby fire departments had the fire about 60 percent contained late Wednesday night and all evacuation orders had been lifted.

WFAA and the Associated Press contributed to this report.
