PLANO — Ten-year-old Amber was a bit shy and self-conscious when she met two dancers at Chamberlain Performing Arts in Plano.

Amber was on crutches because five days earlier, she was bitten by a snake as she played in the park. She spent two days in the hospital.

"I just felt this pain, and I looked down and there was this copperhead slithering off," she said. "My foot was dripping blood."

But the show must go on, so as the ballerinas prepared for their annual performance of The Nutcracker, they give Amber some pointers.

Although she'll be on crutches a few more days, Amber loves being on the go — swimming, drawing and roller-skating. At school, she earns good grades and loves math.

"I like to solve problems," she said.

Amber said she is happy in her foster home and doesn't mind doing chores, but she has a good idea about what she wants from adoptive parents.

"I want a mom and a dad; and my own room — dressed as the Jonas Brothers — a farm ... I want horses, dogs — I want three dogs and one cat."

Caseworkers say Amber is a creative, bright girl who is eager to take an active role in the selection of her new adoptive family.

It's a decision she is ready to tackle... when she gets back on her feet.
