KEMP, Texas — The water shortage in this Kaufman County town of about 1,200 people has reached a critical new level.

Mayor Donald Kile issued a Stage 5 Drought Notice, which implements a series of restrictions aimed at saving the municipal water supply. Until further notice, residents and are prohibited from:

  • watering lawns and landscaping

Violators can face fines between $100 and $500 each day, with water service cut off to repeat offenders.
