ARLINGTON - A North Texas neighborhood leader is putting out a warning to residents interested in renting their houses to Super Bowl visitors, and is being backed by the City of Arlington and the Super Bowl Committee.

Jim Bass, the chairman for the Action North Arlington, is concerned about hundreds of signs appearing around Arlington. They promise as much as $10,000 a day for homeowners willing to rent their houses to Super Bowl visitors.

“I just thought, 'Well, here it comes,'" he said. "There are bound to be some scammers who talk about how rich you can get by leasing out your house, and I'm skeptical of that in general.”

The Internet sites tout large homes for lease with big price tags. But, call the number and you're quoted a price tag of your own, a listing and advertising fee. One company said it would cost $895 to list a home for the Super Bowl.

Tara Green, chief operating officer of the North Texas Super Bowl Host Committee, said she too has seen the signs.

“There are no guarantees of occupancy for your home," she said. "So, our word of caution is please be educated before you enter into an agreement like that ... The reality is we have an abundance of hotel rooms in North Texas and those will meet the demands of the traveler.”

An Arlington city spokesman agreed and added another warning. Homeowners who decide to rent their houses during the Super Bowl will owe the city and state part of that money in the form of hotel occupancy taxes.
