FORT WORTH - Veterans Day will always be special for a North Texas veteran.

It's the day Bertha Gandara, a member of the Air Force, delivered her first child.

"The military changed my life," the new mother beamed minutes after delivery. "Now she's going to change my life even more. So, that's why it's special to me."

Gandara, 28, enlisted in the Air Force nine years ago. She currently works for the medical squadron at Fort Worth's Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base.

She loves serving her country and had been hoping for months her child would be born on Veterans Day.

"I'm very passionate about my job," she said. "I wouldn't change it for the world."

Friday afternoon she got her wish, giving birth to a little girl, Minerva Jimenez, at Medical City of Dallas. The infant weighs in at 7 pounds, 11 ounces.

"Maybe she'll become an airman or a soldier," Gandara said.
