EL PASO (AP) — U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has recommended that transit systems in Houston and Dallas receive $279 million as part of $2.2 billion in recommended transportation projects nationally.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit is slated to get $79 million to pay for completion of the Green Line extension. Houston is in line for $100 million for its own light rail system.

La Hood also recommended $15.2 million in funding for a proposed bus line that would connect downtown El Paso to nearby Fort Bliss and several working-class neighborhoods. The 12-mile Dyer Corridor in El Paso would provide faster service from downtown to Fort Bliss, the second largest Army post in the country, and other neighborhoods.

LaHood said the bus line would bring "access to jobs and training for families that cannot afford to own a car."
