DENTON - University of North Texas students have voted down a referendum that would have allowed same-sex couples to be elected as the school's homecoming court starting in 2010.

Last week, University of North Texas students voted on the referendum that take are effective next year.

UNT students went onine to cast their ballots until 5 p.m. Friday. The votes were counted over the weekend and will be posted on the Student Government Association Web site.

If the measure passed, it could have led to the possibility of a homecoming court with two kings or two queens.

The Student Senate initially voted to ban gay couples from running for the 2009 homecoming court, and that prompteda number of student protests.

The Senate later reversed its decision, clearing the way for the student referendum.

Some students view this as a gay rights issue; others see it as a vote to keep the "traditional" homecoming alive on the UNT campus.
