DALLAS -- The Texas Department of Transportation is trying something new to keep down the noise of traffic.

For the next month, workers will install specially-designed acrylic panels along Interstate 30 between Edgefield and Sylvan avenues west of downtown Dallas..

If the product proves durable, it could be used as a tool to mitigate noise along major highways  across the state. TxDOT has budgeted $884,000 from its research fund for the project.

“We very much take into consideration the front-line receivers, the people who live right along the freeway,” said TxDOT spokeswoman Donna Huerta.
