DALLAS — A wrong-way driver slammed head-on into another vehicle early Friday morning, injuring both motorists.

Jose Chavez, 38, faces a charge of driving while intoxicated after he drove his 2-door Nissan south onto the northbound lanes of Stemmons at Northwest Highway, police said.

Police said Chavez apparently started driving southbound in the northbound lanes of the freeway at the Northwest Highway exit. He went six miles before hitting another car driven by a 26-year-old woman near Market Center Boulevard at 2:45 a.m.

"It's a miracle that both these drivers survived this accident," said Dallas police spokesman Lt. Jimmy Vaughn.

Both drivers were hospitalized with serious injuries, but both are expected to survive.

Investigators said they don't yet know why the man was going in the wrong direction.
