CELESTE -- Three people were killed in a head-on collision between a car and a SUV Thursday night in Hunt County.

The crash occurred on Highway 69 near County Road 1040 around 8 p.m. Thursday. The SUV and the car hit head on, sending the SUV off the road.

The highway was closed in both directions while deputies investigated the crash.

The victims were identified as 44-year-old Brett Vick, of Greenville, and 65-year-old Ouida Richards and 84-year-old Melba Compton, both of Celeste.

Richards, who went by the name "Caroline," was a longtime employee with the City of Garland and the daughter of Compton.

Both Compton and Richards were riding inside the SUV when a Chevy Impala, driven by Vick, veered into oncoming traffic and slamming into the SUV head on, authorities said.

The mother and daughter were returning home from visiting family members in Dallas when the crash occurred.

"[Richards] was one of the hardest workers in the department," said Kevin Slay, a City of Garland co-worker. "And Caroline was a mentor, and in a lot of ways, a mother to many in the department. She is going to be greatly missed and we are all in shock this morning."
