GRAPEVINE — While many boaters are getting ready to hit the lakes this weekend, some will be looking for answers after their boats went up in flames on Grapevine Lake.

It happened around 4 a.m. Friday at the Silver Lake Marina across from the Gaylord Texan Resort.

As daylight broke at Grapevine Lake, a shell of a boat was all that was left for fire investigators to examine. They spent the morning trying to find what sparked three 30-foot boats to go up in flames.

"The call came in from a marina guest who was asleep on his boat," said Grapevine Fire Department Deputy Chief Kent Short. "He woke up and saw cracking, popping noises, saw fire and called 911."

Investigators said the fire is not suspicious, and they have ruled out arson.

Grapevine firefighters had to set two boats loose to prevent the fire from spreading; those two boats later sank.

Three other boats also suffered minor damage, as did the marina.

"Damage to the marina I'd say is minor to moderate," Short said. "The structure itself is mainly metal; there's a little damage to some woodwork, it's minor."

The point of origin of the overnight fire is yet to be determined.

No one was aboard any of the boats when the fire broke out, and no one was injured.
