DALLAS - A man police said was spotted trying to break into a car at a Dallas high school was arrested after a standoff that took place for several hours at an Oak Cliff home.

Police surrounded the home in the 500 block of Avenue L after the suspect fled after attempting to break into a car at Roosevelt High School, authorities said. The suspect was first spotted at about 8:30 a.m., took off on foot and then barricaded himself inside the home.

Three young children were inside, but were seen exiting safe later in the afternoon.

Roads in the area were closed as SWAT team members stood ready outside the house.

Shortly before 12:30 p.m., the suspect surrendered peacefully.
