ROWLETT — A Rowlett woman says she was terrorized, her friend was shot, and her house burned down.
Now she's wondering if police could have done more to help her.
Veronica Galaviz said her relationship with her estranged husband was abusive. Last week, police said Jacque Eagon broke into her house, shot her friend, and set her house on fire before Eagon took his own life.
Galaviz had a protective order that was issued in November. Galaviz's lawyer said video showed Eagon slashing her client's tires.
Galaviz said she has evidence proving that Eagon ignored the protective order and that she called police repeatedly. "I went to them. I begged and I pleaded. I don't know what else to do; I don't know what else to do," she said. "He... he is going to kill me, and I need your help."
Galaviz and her lawyer are now calling for stronger enforcement of protective orders.
Rowlett's police department told News 8 that it had investigated all complaints, and said if something had been found, action would have been taken.
Galaviz' case is just one example of the more than 180,000 cases of domestic violence each year in Texas.
In 2008, 136 women were murdered by their partner. That's when the Texas Council on Family Violence started tracking the information..
Nearly 12,000 adults had to seek shelter from their partners that year, and more than 15,000 children needed to be rescued from abusive situations.
A survey showed that domestic violence is a concern for the majority of Texans. Three out of four say either they personally, a family member, or a friend have experienced it in some form.
