FORT WORTH — Firefighters battled a late-night blaze Thursday at an abandoned church in Fort Worth.

According to Carol Jones, a spokeswoman with the Fort Worth Fire Department, emergency crews were alerted to the fire in the 5400 block of Elgin St. at about 10:43 p.m.

Upon their arrivale to the scene, firefighters saw thick smoke and flames shooting from the structure.

Jones said crews were forced to evacuate the building when the roof began to collapse. Eventually, firefighters were able to go back inside and extinguish the blaze.

No one was injured in the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
