The annual St. Patrick’s Day parade started in fine form about 11 a.m. Saturday.

Hundreds lined both sides of Greenville Avenue near Park Lane to watch the floats go by. A record number of people attended. It was so crowded, shuttles had to be rerouted and cell phone service was spotty.

Irene Rensendes from Amarillo brought her four grandchildren.

“I love it,” she said. “I love the excitement, the people, the color.”

The floats were sponsored by an odd assortment of groups and companies – Hare Krishnas, law firms, energy drinks, restaurants, radio stations and others.

There were flatbed trailers and motor boats pulled by trucks. Some danced under the bright sunshine as police watched the crowd.

Oddest sight – a man on stilts dressed in black.

Best sign, from a bail bond company – There’s no green beer in jail.
