DALLAS -- Dallas is one step closer to hosting the 2016 Republican National Convention.

If the city is chosen, some of the events would be held at the American Airlines Center. The site committee is expected to visit June 11-13.

Several other cities are in the running including Denver, Cleveland and Kansas City, Missouri.

Some people have said that Dallas is considered a strong contender because of its "coalition of wealthy donors with ties to the Bush family and oil industry." That's according to an Associated Press report.

City leaders hope the city's energy, plethora of hotels and convention facilities will be enough to secure the role.

A final decision is expected sometime later this summer. The RNC will be held in 2016.
