Possum Kingdom State Park was evacuated Tuesday night as firefighters from 13 agencies battled a stubborn brush fire in neighboring Stephens County.

Palo Pinto County Fire Marshal Buddy Harwell said the fire was traveling in the direction of the park, which was evacuated voluntarily as a precaution.

As of 4 a.m. Wednesday, more than 600 acres had burned, but no buildings had yet burned or been threatened.

Members of the state's forestry service stayed at the scene to watch for flare-ups.

Devastating wildfires in 2011 scorched 125,000 acres and destroyed 126 homes near Possum Kingdom Lake.
