PLANO — On Shadow Crest Drive in Plano, neighbors are coming together to mail hundreds of letters to help one of their own on the block.
"We are really hoping to help this family through a very difficult time," said Claudia Vilfordi. "They are the kind of people that make the impossibly difficult look amazingly simple."
Days before Christmas last year, Sharon and Danny White took their daughter, Micaela, to the hospital. The routine visit for a cold turned into a frightening diagnosis.
"It was just your normal cold, but it wasn't," Sharon White said.
Doctors diagnosed the 18-year-old with leukemia. But her strength is pulling her family through every day.
"She's positive, funny and kind," White said. "She's been through the toughest things a child can go through and she still smiles."
But their family's troubles didn't end there. In February, a fire damaged their home.
Construction workers are already making repairs. Meanwhile, friends and neighbors are stepping up — doing anything they can to help the White family, from making donations to cooking meals.
The Whites are overwhelmed.
"To do something for one my kids is the nicest thing that anybody can do for us," Sharon White said.
Family, friends and neighbors are not only offering their support. They are praying for Micaela's recovery.
"A complete and non-equivocal recovery for Micaela, that she can return to her life as she knew before," said neighbor Chic Leehan. "She'll be healthy, live vibrantly... that would be an awesome outcome."
Micaela, a a senior at Ursuline Academy of Dallas, has finished her third round of chemotherapy. She will soon be scheduled for a bone marrow transplant.
Her family believes Micaela will beat cancer and go pursue her college dreams. She has already been accepted to the University of Oklahoma.
"She's our child that wants to fly," Sharon White said. "She's adventurous. She has so many plans. She will get there."
Micaela spent Christmas, New Year's and her birthday in the hospital at Children's Medical Center. The Christmas tree at home is still up.
Her family, her neighborhood are waiting to celebrate every holiday and the homecoming they have been praying for.
"We are going to have a very victorious party," White said. "Christmas all wrapped into one when she comes home."
