DALLAS - Two officers and a third person were injured in a crash on northbound Interstate 35E south of Beckley Avenue around 12:15 p.m. Tuesday in Dallas.
The officers were in the midst of training on their motorcycles when the wreck occurred. Both were transported to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
In a statement released later in the afternoon, police identified the officers as Wayne Nichols and Michael Keating. Police said the two men were riding alongside one another when a driver of a Toyota Camry swerved into their lane in an attempt to avoid a vehicle that was braking, the statement read. The Camry hit one of the officer's motorcycles, pushing it into the other and taking down both officers.
More than a dozen officers swarmed the freeway as emergency crews worked to get the injured carried onto ambulances. The northbound lanes were completely shut down and two far left lanes on the southbound side were also closed. They reopened at 1:45 p.m.
Nichols was transported to Methodist Central Hospital and Keating to Baylor Hospital.
The driver of the Camry was also transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police say they do not expect any charges to be filed.
