MIDLOTHIAN -- An off-duty police officer has been involved in a major crash in Ellis County.

Police say just after 2 p.m., a Ford pickup truck rear-ended a tractor-trailer, which was carrying steel, on West Highway 287 near Midlothian Parkway.

Police and fire crews shut down 287 and had to extricate the driver of the pickup, who turned out to be an off-duty police officer for the Midlothian Police Department.

He was flown via helicopter to Parkland Hospital in Dallas. His condition is unknown at this time and his name has not yet been released.

It's not clear whether the driver of the tractor-trailer was injured.

At this time northbound 287 is closed down to one lane as police investigate.
